A comprehensive introduction to the techniques, methods and creative potential of sculptural ceramics. The course covers uses of ceramic clay, the techniques of hand-building, coiling, slab building and hollowing out, also techniques of firing and glazing.
By the end of the course, students can expect:
• To learn best studio practice, including care and recycling of clay.
• To have developed an understanding of the nature and applications of various different clays.
• To learn the techniques of hand building, including slabbing, pinching and coiling, and various ways of treating the surface of the clay.
• To explore decoration techniques of slipping, underglazing and glazing, and gain a basic knowledge of how slips and gazes are made.
• To examine how these practical skills can be applied to the making of sculpture
• To understand how to pack and fire a kiln.
• To develop three projects from conception through to completion, keeping a sketch book for visual development, and a file for technical notes.
• To develop a critical faculty when working
Each lesson will include demonstrations, theory, crits, personal project development, and a group discussion.
