Introduction to glass sculpture (kiln formed)

Full course details and booking at foot of page

Explore the varied making techniques of kiln-formed glass. This course offers a general overview including a brief study of the history of glassmaking and an in-depth study into a self-initiated project in Glass. It will give each student the opportunity to experiment with ideas and technical glassmaking skills from a sculptural perspective.

This course will enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of glassmaking techniques including glass cutting, glass fusing, glass slumping, pate- de-verre, small scale open glass casting and making the relevant moulds, surface decoration, kiln programming and understanding temperatures, and assemblage and display techniques. It is expected that each student will begin with an open and experimental making approach and then choose a technique, or techniques that favour their aptitude and expression in this material. Group discussion and analysis of the classes work as we progress will broaden the individuals understanding and experience of the subject.

Creative translation from idea to skills learnt - The main aim of the course is to emphasise a creative approach to different kiln firing techniques, and an experimental approach to glassmaking. Students will discover glass techniques that are more appropriate than others to their ideas, upon which their study will focus with an aim to producing a finished piece by the end of the course.
