Essential drawing skills

This course is for students who want to develop a solid grounding in the essential elements of drawing. Over three terms students will be led through the basic fundamentals of drawing. Each term students will explore a range of drawing: from observation, memory, and imagination, inside the studio, out and about, and in galleries and museums, working from still life, life, imagination and other artists’ work.

The three components each last a term and can be taken individually or studied as a
one-year course at a discounted rate.

Spring Term 2012:
Materials and Mark Making (pencil, charcoal/conté, ink/watercolour, line,
tone and texture)

Summer Term 2012:
Composition and Response (scale, viewpoint, focal point, selection,
positioning of the image, rhythm, mood, touch)

Autumn Term 2012:
Measurement and Proportion (systems of measurement, the
use of directions – horizontals, verticals and diagonals, shape
