Aims and Objectives

The aim of this course is to help students understand tone and light through different media and by looking at other artists’ work.

The main objective is that students, through study, will channel this into their own work more successfully and confidently.

Content

The course starts with development of basic tonal understanding, using simple forms and

techniques. The course moves on to looking at three very different artist and the way that

they use tone and light to convey a message. There is then the opportunity for students to

use this knowledge to develop their own composition in the final 2 weeks.

Teaching Strategy

•The difference between working on a variaty of surfaces and its effects.

•The understanding of mixing the paint with binders

•The understanding of paint: pigment content, light fastness etc.

•The function of solvents and thinners on canvas grounds

•The understanding of brush types and what they are suited for.
