Advanced Sculpture Series: Stylized Figuration
Full course details and booking at foot of page
This is the first of the Art Academy's new 'Advanced Sculpture Series' of short courses. Aimed at intermediate and advanced sculptors, each course will focus on a specific topic, and may combine studio work with museum or other site visits to look at relevant examples of sculpture, ancient and modern, in order to draw inspiration and technical knowledge from them.
This four-day course starts with a research visit to the British Museum. Students will then explore through clay and plaster the various ways the figure has been abstracted and stylized by different civilizations. Through modeling exercises students will also explore modern figurative sculpture and the rationale behind the process of stylization. Students will work with reference to a life model to develop their own visual language of abstraction.
Alongside her work as a professional sculptor, course tutor Chloe Leaper teaches a very popular and successful component entitled 'Creative Sculpture in the Life Room' as part of the Academy's Diploma in Fine Art programme. She will also be running a series of schools workshops at the British Museum, related to their 'Kingdom of Ife' exhibition.
