Printmaking Taster Course

This course offers an introduction to printmaking. Guided by one-to-one tutoring from Victoria Browne, a renowned artist with over ten years of printmaking experience, students will learn different techniques each week to develop a portfolio of prints. AAP studio is a low-toxic environment with professional printmaking facilities for a hands-on learning experience for a maximum of 8 students per course.

Course Content

Week 1: Monoprint – An intuitive, direct, painterly technique of printing. This approach allows attendees to develop multiple images and experiment with colour and stroke.

Week 2: Linocut – A relief printing technique, using traditional woodcutting tools. The soft linoleum is cut away to produce a raised surface to be inked, printed and editioned.

Week 3: Etching - An intaglio technique which relies on acid incising through hard and soft grounds. Drawings and texture expose the metal plate, which is bitten, then inked up and printed using a high pressure on an etching press.

Week 4: Aquatint - An intaglio technique used to create tonal areas rather than drawings and texture. An aquatint box applies a thin layer of rosin particles and once adhered to the plate resists the acid to develop a tonal scale.

Week 5: Collagraph – Materials are collaged onto a card base support to create a a textured and incised surface which is later varnished. Collagraph combines both relief and intaglio printing techniques.

Week 6: Editioning – A full day dedicated to editioning the collagraph plates made the previous week, and to develop colour in both relief and intaglio.

Diploma and Certificate courses
The Academy runs a three year intensive practice based fine art Diploma course, focusing on sculpture and painting and covering both traditional figurative skills and creative practice.
The Certificate courses are ideal for people who are serious about developing their artistic talent, but have a limited
amount of time to give to it. The courses run one day a week for two years and include a very comprehensive
programme of study in each area.
The courses include skill development, creative exploration within the subject, and personal guidance, and all culminate in a final show to help develop and finish the work.
